Asymmetrical Dot
Asymmetrical Dot is Stephen Emmer’s most intimate album to date: a sonic meditation on identity, loss, renewal and the quiet power of imbalance. Created during a year marked by personal transition, the passing of his mother, the birth of his first grandchild, the loss of a close friend and a health crisis, the music moves gently between departure and arrival.
Drawing from Indonesian traditions, Western chamber music and atmospheric sound art, the album blends sustained tones, contrapuntal textures and wordless voices into an open, contemplative landscape. An international ensemble gives the work its layered global character, where difference remains audible rather than unified. Asymmetrical Dot ultimately reveals asymmetry not as a flaw, but as a source of strength, continuity and dialogue across generations.
It is mixed by Fernando Aponte (Venezuela) and Nick Taylor (UK) and mastered by recent Grammy-winner Patricia Sullivan in LA. Produced by Stephen Emmer (Netherlands) for Electric Fairytale Recordings.
Vocalist Beth Hirsch might ring a bell as she was the main female vocalist and co-composer of french band Air and mixer Fernando Aponte was the associate producer for the late Ryuichi Sakamoto for many years, whereas Courtney Young and Maria A Quintanella are acclaimed experimental vocal artists in the USA.
The independently released album is deliberately genre-defying and looks for bringing back some more sonic adventure and experimentalism into the current musical climate, in which playing it safe seems to be too often ‘required’.
