Stephen Emmer is a deliberate genre-defying composer/ artist from Amsterdam, Holland, who believes that limiting yourself to one musical genre is an undesirable restraint on artistic self-development and should not be the main representation or objective in search of a personal musical identity.
Stephen's inspiration for Maison Melody originates in the music of silence by Federico Mompou.
SE: "It is with pride and joy that I here like to offer to you my new album called Maison Melody, an instrumental music-project performed on piano and strings and indie-released on a non-profit basis."
He wrote music for both the NOS Journaal and RTL Nieuws, composed RTL Boulevard's leader tune and was responsible for the opening tune of EditieNL. Now composer Stephen Emmer is rewarded for his work with the Buma Oeuvre Award Multimedia. He'll receive the prize on Monday 9 March 2020.
Dutch composer, arranger and artist Stephen Emmer has been busy collaborating with Canadian artist Wilroy, remixing tracks from his award-winning album Home Ground, originally released in 2017 and featuring the likes of Chaka Khan, Patti Austin and Leon Ware.
“The presence of an album is shorter nowadays than ever before,” he says, “so to extend its lifecycle you can update it with modifications as part of an extended artistic development. I think Kanye started that idea and today you see lots of people doing it, from Radiohead to Drake.”
The Wilroy remix EP came about after Emmer was listening in to Mary Anne Hobbs radio show on 6 music, where she played an abstract soul track by a talented Canadian born artist called Wilroy. The experimental music made such a wonderful and everlasting impression on Stephen, that he decided to reach out and ask Wilroy if he would be interested in re-working six tracks from his Home Ground album.

Each year Global Music Awards honors a composer/artist/musician with its annual Humanitarian Award for music dedicated to social justice, humanitarian causes or environmental issues. The 2018 award goes to Stephen Emmer for his contribution to peace and justice for displaced people from around the world. Stephen would herewith like to dedicate the award to War Child, for their relentless dedication in trying to make this world a better place by helping ‘our’ children – the best cornerstone imaginable for a future world at peace.
The original is a dreamy, lush and soulful affair. Chaka’s distinctive voice is draped in funky bass guitar, horns, strings and rhythm guitar, evoking Chaka’s ’70s heyday while giving over to a modern sheen. The remixes rightfully capitalize on this and send the song spinning in different directions.
