Emmer's miscellaneous musical career, which encompasses free jazz, rock, electronic noise (he was a member of the Factory-signed band Minny Pops), and points outlying, is reflected in the startlingly diverse music on Recitement.

Pop en poëzie, muziek en spoken word – combinaties die al vele malen eerder een wat wringend en ongemakkelijk huwelijk zijn aangegaan. Recitement is wél een alleszins geslaagde poging om schrijvers, zangers en muzikanten uit verleden en heden harmonieus samen te brengen. De zeventien zeer uiteenlopende composities in zeven talen vormen dankzij de Nederlandse bedenker/componist/arrangeur/muzikant Stephan Emmer wel een logisch en redelijk gemakkelijk uit te zitten geheel.
Op Recitement zijn nogal wat beroemde mensen te horen. Jorge Luis Borges, Samuel Beckett, Allen Ginsburg en Richard Burton droegen postuum bij aan een plaat vol spoken word, sfeervol en passend van muziek voorzien door Stephen Emmer. Maar Lou Reed was springlevend, toen hij in de New Yorkse studio van de nauwelijks minder bekende topproducer Tony Visconti zijn tekst voor Passenger insprak. „Hij wilde best meedoen aan zo’n klein Europees arty project, had hij gemaild.”
Het is de laatste tijd hip om poëzie en proza een vrijage met jazz te laten aangaan. Stephen Emmer doet dat ook, maar anders. Hij gebruikt teksten van acteurs, musici en schrijvers en laat die door hen of door hem gekozen persoonlijkheden uitspreken. Daarop improviseren hij en zijn medemusici.
Met Recitement brengt de Amsterdamse multi-instrumentalist Stephen Emmer een opvallend album uit.
